Year 6
Introduction
Dear Parents and Carers,
We hope that you enjoyed the recent holiday and had an opportunity to have a rest at some point! All pupils have returned to school refreshed and full of energy, which is a relief as there are plenty of activities/learning experiences planned for the final two terms this year.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support you are providing your child/children as they prepare for the KS2 end of year assessments. Pupils will continue to receive interactive homework tasks on My Maths, as well as some reading and writing activities, which will aid them in their preparation for the assessments. Letters detailing the timetabling of the SATs will be issued to all parents/carers in the forthcoming weeks.
Literacy
Pupils made excellent progress with both their reading and writing throughout terms 3 and 4. Pupils will continue to develop their understanding of different genres throguhout this term, in preparation for their final writing assessments of this year. The children will actively explore poems by Walter De La Mere as well as various non-fiction texts. Presently, the children are focusing on the use of creative language as well as accurate grammar and punctuation in their work.
Pupils will continue to read in a group weekly focusing on a writer's use of language in a text, as well as the format and style of different texts. We ask that you continue to listen to your child/children read regularly, as this has a direct impact on both their comprehension and their ability to use and experiment with language in their writing.
Maths
We are pleased to see that pupils are making use of the My Maths website at home to help them consolidate mathematical concepts in class. Throughout this term pupils will continue to develop their understanding of all aspects of the maths curriculum and, in order to embed these skills, they will be completing open-ended mathematical investigations. Pupils have been asked to make use of the Revision Guides, which were distributed at the end of last term, to support them in their understanding of mathematical terminology.
Science
This term we will be studying scientific processes related sound and light. Pupils will focus on how both light and sound travel and be constructing a range of fair tests to answer their own scientific questions.
ICT
The use of databases will be explored throughout terms 5 and 6.
DT
In term 4 the children will be designing and making musical instruments. This project dovetails nicely with their exploration of sound in Science and the use of musical instruments in Kenya which is the focus of our Learning Adventure.
French
Pupils will continue to develop basic conversational French in their weekly French sessions.
Art
Our Art this term is based around the patterns, colours and textures used in the jewellery and art produced by the Maasai tribe in Kenya. Pupils will design and make Maasai masks and patterned pots out of clay.
RE
Pupils will be studying the customs, festivals and celebrations in Kenya.
Learning Adventure
Comparing Kenya and the UK is the focus in our Learning Adventure throughout terms 5 and 6. Pupils will be exploring the landscape of Kaptalamwa (a village in Kenya) and comparing this with Seaford. They will look at the changing landscapes in Kenya and explore the weather systems/climate in the country. As part of our preparation for the Olympics, pupils will (in term 6) research Kenyan athletes and produce work related to the history of the Olympics, as well as London's preparation for 2012.
We have asked pupils to bring in any artefacts related to Kenya and/or the Olympics which might help them as they progress with this Learning Adventure.
Music
This term pupils will be working together to develop their singing skills in preparation for their end of year performance. More information about the end of year production, as well as performance dates, will be issued in a letter in the forthcoming weeks.
PE
We have asked pupils to make an extra effort to remember their correct PE kits in preparation for their lessons on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons in terms 5 and 6. Pupils will be developing their skills in gymnastics, dance, striking and fielding games and athletics throughout the summer.
We thank you in advance for all your support and urge you to speak to your class teacher if you have any questions about the information contained within this news letter. We look forward to working with your children as they commence their final stage of their Primary School journey.
